If it’s true the root of the word courage (cor) is Latin for “heart” and its earliest form meant to speak by sharing everything in one’s heart, then Ali Gray’s newest release, Love Letters, is a triumph of courage. This third solo album from the Minneapolis singer-songwriter was spurred by the abrupt death of a troubled, close friend – and all the attendant regrets one can have about not having done more to help. The result is ten tracks penned for specific friends and loved ones. Those familiar with Gray’s past work know it leaned solidly toward rootsy Americana with touches of ‘70s rock. “I wanted this record to be softer, fluid, more open,” says Gray. While the vulnerabilities explored forced her to face certain fears, she maintains, “these are the best songs I’ve written to date, in terms of both format and straightforward simplicity.” Gray’s hope is the innate intimacy of the songs will transcend their predominantly personal nature for audiences. “I hope the listener will hear the heart and soul behind it – that it will carry over to others, lend comfort and possibly help others articulate what’s in their own hearts for the people in their lives while the opportunity is still there.”

“No brazen antics. No shocking ploys. Gray’s brand of audacity simply works on a more refined level. The envelope she dares to push on Johnson Street is one of real substance and, indeed, this sophomore release should firmly establish Gray as a songwriter who dares to be at once brave yet vulnerable, cunning yet achingly sincere.”

Release Date: November, 2009

“Talents like Ali Gray, while rare, do exist and deserve to be heard by larger audiences than they might attract in their home markets. Johnson Street is a breath of fresh air, bouncing back and forth between Country, Pop and Blues-driven Rock. Gray has a mesmerizing voice; the sort that other artists long to be compared to. The songwriting on Johnson Street is superb, and the weakest songs might have a shot at radio play. Check out Johnson Street; this sort of album doesn’t happen every day.” Wildy’s World

“Hints of David Bowie, Fleetwood Mac and Tammy Wynette pop up on local singer Ali Gray’s new album, “Johnson Street.” Sharply produced by Patrik Tanner, the disc sees Gray making highly commercial, ’70s-style country rock that’s likely to appeal to fans of the more twangy acts to pop up on Cities 97, as well as those who prefer the more rebellious ladies of K102.” By Ross Raihala

“Ali Gray is one of the most talented and genuine performers that I’ve been lucky enough to share the stage with over the years. I hope this new CD captures her the wider audience she deserves.” Martin Zellar

“I have had the pleasure to share the stage with Ali Gray. Her energy and talent keeps the audience involved and entertained. She is an asset to the Minneapolis music scene!” Tina Schlieske
